Diphtheria spreads to Jigawa, kills 10 children, 91 cases recorded

Following the diphtheria outbreak in Jigawa state, no fewer than ten children are suspected to have died, with 91 other cases recorded in the state.

The permanent secretary of the health ministry, Dr. Salisu Mu’azu made disclosure while fielding questions from newsmen in the state.

Mu’azu however, explained that “ so far two case had been confirmed at Kazaure and Jahun local government as some samples hade been taken to Abuja for confirmation

“The epidemic had been recorded at areas with zero dose of rotten immunisation in the affected local government areas in the state”.

He said there was an outbreak ot the disease in JIgawa neighbouring Kano and Yobe states.

Ma’azu noted that the ministry had already conducted laylisten and collected necessary information and data in the effects areas and updated the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHDA) and National Disease Control (NDC) for further actions.

The permanent secretary, said the state government is making arrangements for administering vaccine in state when ever the vaccine arrived.

He however attributed the outbreak to the healthcare services distraction some years back during COVID-19 pandemic when everything suspended a reason that a rotten immunisation was not carried out.
