Senate President Godswill Akpabio has explained that the fear of a vacuum in the leadership and management of the country’s apex bank , the Central Bank of Nigeria compelled the Senate to reconvene from it’s annual vacation.
According to the Senate President , the sudden resignation of the Central Bank of Nigeria ,Godwin Emefiele who is currently facing various charges by the Department of State Service and his four deputy Governors created a vacuum that needed to be filled in the interest of the economy .
Akpabio explained further that the nomination of the Central Bank Governor and four deputies by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu needed to be treated as an issue of urgent national importance ,hence the resumption of the Senate .
President Tinubu had nominated Olayemi Cardoso for office of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria , Enem Usoro, Muhammad Abdullahi-Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor and Bala Bello as Deputy Governors .
There nominations were in accordance with section 10(3)(a )of the Central Bank of Nigeria and sent there names to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
“We decided to resume today so that there won’t be any vacuum in the CBN.
“As you are all aware the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and his four deputies had resigned .
“So we needed to reconvene immediately so that we can screen and confirm the President’s nominees for appointments into the management and leadership of the Central Bank of Nigeria as urgent national importance”.
PEOPLES DAILY Newspapers had earlier reported that the Senate May Shift it’s resumption to second week in October to make up for the time it cut into its recess to conduct the screening and confirmation of ministerial nominees for appointment as ministers .
However,in view of what the Senate President regarded as urgent national importance to avoid an eminent vacuum in the leadership of the apex bank and it’s economic catastrophe , the Senate had to immediately reconvene .
This explanation of the Senate President after over four hours of executive session also explains immediate resumption of the nominees before there confirmation into there various offices .
There has been an outcry over the resumption of the nominated CBN Governor and his Deputies before senate’s confirmation.
