Senators yesterday lamented over lack of jobs in Nigeria, even as they urged Nigerians to unite against terrorism and violence for national development.

This followed a motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba and the other 108 Senators, entitled, “felicitation on Nigeria’s 15th democracy anniversary”

Leading the debate on the motion, Ndoma-Egba said, “the Senate notes that Nigeria’s nascent democracy is maturing as she celebrates the 15th anniversary of her democracy”.

Contributing, the Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Abdul Ningi, noted that the National Assembly had done well within the fifteen years of democratic governance. He however, lamented that the Executive had neglected the nation’s apex Parliament by not respecting its resolutions over the years.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu on his part observed that the democracy had recorded tremendous achievements in fifteen years, pointing out that a lot of infrastructural facilities had been put in place.

He however, frowned at the attitude of Nigerians towards the law, regretting that Nigerians were in the habit of violating the constitution and other laws of the land.

“Nigerians don’t obey laws. All the countries in the world that must move forward must obey God and also obey the law”, he stressed.

Senator Ahmed Lawan noted that within these years of democratic rule, the relationship between the Executive and the Legislature, which was nothing to write home about had improved, but pointed out that the situation deteriorated again from the year 2011.

In his concluding statement on the motion, the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark pointed out that freedom of speech was the greatest gain of this democracy, saying, “Under the military, you dare not criticize the government. Few who did it had to run away for their dear life. We must work hard to ensure that we have credible elections, so that those who are elected can operate as true representatives of the people”.
