The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), FCT chapter, has strongly urged the federal government to take decisive actions towards unlocking the tourism potential of the country.

During its Monthly General Meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Engr. Ben Osy Okoh, the chapter’s chairman, emphasized that iconic landmarks such as Zuma Rock, Asokoro Rock, and Kuje Rock should not merely serve as historical references.

Highlighting the substantial contribution of tourism to economic growth and its role in environmental conservation when properly managed, Okoh stressed the need for the Nigerian government to take bold measures in developing tourism potential.

He advocated transforming landmarks like Zuma Rock and Asokoro Rock into major tourist destinations akin to the Sugar Loaf in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Additionally, Okoh proposed the development of infrastructure such as the Third Mainland Bridge into significant tourist sites comparable to the Rio Niteroi Bridge in Brazil and Tower Bridge in London.

Okoh urged expedited completion of the Millennium Tower to fully harness its tourism potential and called on state governments to develop tourist destinations within their jurisdictions as additional revenue sources.

Commenting on transportation, he observed that successful countries like Germany, Poland, and Italy carefully balance public and private transportation options. Okoh emphasized the necessity of implementing the FCT Master plan’s transit system to alleviate congestion on city roads and discourage excessive private car ownership.

Addressing the inclusion of disabled individuals in urban planning, he called on the government to consider their needs in the Abuja master plan.

Engr. Okoh emphasized the importance of providing Nigerian professionals with the latest technological advancements through international collaboration, training, seminars, and workshops.

He urged the government to consult relevant professional bodies for advice before awarding engineering contracts, with the bodies monitoring projects independently to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
