Lagos wins gold at Dangote Open Gymnastics Championship

Team Lagos at the weekend in Abuja clinched gold in the intermediate male category of the 5th Alhaji Aliko Dangote Open Gymnastics Championships.

The team results in the intermediate boys category saw Team Lagos clinch gold with 97.81 points.

Competition in the intermediate boys category had began on Friday and ended on Saturday.

Team FCT took the silver with 72.51 points, while Team Rivers settled for bronze with 69.80 points.

Team Oyo clinched gold in the intermediate female category rounded up earlier today.

The overall team results in the intermediate girls category saw Team Oyo finish tops with 82.02 points.

Team FCT took the silver with 79.33 points, while Team Lagos settled for bronze with 76.62 points.

10 states and four clubs are taking part in this year’s edition of the championships holding at the Abuja National Stadium’s Gymnasium.

The states include Lagos, Anambra, Edo, Oyo, Gombe, Ondo, Bayelsa, Rivers and Ekiti, as well as the FCT.

The participating clubs are Tony International Gymnastics Clubs I and II of Abuja, B and G Gymnastics Club of Ogun, Bosco International Club of Plateau and Eagle Gymnastics Club of Lagos.

The championships are in three categories, with the junior championship for gymnasts of five to 11 years of age.

The intermediate championship is for 11 to 16 year-olds, while the senior category is for those who are 16 years and above.

In the individual performance category, Prosper Okosun of Edo was best all-round in the intermediate boys’ category with 35.45 points.

Segun Olufemi of Lagos won the silver medal, after also amassing a best all-round record of 35.45 points.

Michael Fadoju of Ondo, settled for bronze after amassing a best all-round record of 33.60 points.

Also, in the individual performance category, Mercy James of FCT was best all-round in the intermediate girls’ category with 35.30 points.

Jumoke Omofaye of Oyo won the silver medal, after also amassing a best all-round record of 28.56 points.

Akintola Otega of Lagos, settled for bronze after amassing a best all-round record of 27.02 points.
