Period poverty refers to the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products due to financial constraints.
It can also be associated with a lack of access to education or facilities that allow for hygienic management of periods.
Many girls especially in the rural areas resort to using things like rags, cotton wools and so many other things which may eventually cause infection and even lead to infertility in future.
A lot of girls miss schools on the days they are on period because they cannot afford items to manage it and this eventually affect their grades in school.
Some girls become sad once it’s their period because they cannot afford sanitary pads and other items to manage menstrual cycle like panties and even bathing soaps and deodorants.
In 2021, ex-minister of women affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen said “over 37 million Nigerian women of menstruating age do not have access to sanitary pads due to financial constraints”.
To curb this menace you and I have to do something, hence the birth of “end period poverty”.
End period poverty is a non profit initiative by Dr. Hafsat Akande (PhD), a mother and a teacher who has worked with these girls and is doing this program to create more awareness for period poverty through her online platform @that_african_mom
On 7th, December 2023 she and other volunteer women visited Government Girls Secondary School, Elelewon to donate sanitary pads and exercise books and to sensitive girls on how to manage their menstrual circle.
