The National Commission for the Coordination and Control of Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NATCOM) Bill aims to address Nigeria’s challenges of insecurity, unemployment, and poverty that have plagued the nation.

The commission, through a statement signed by David Olaitan, the head of its Media team, shared with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, expressed confidence in Dr. Baba Mohammed as the right person for the job.

Olaitan explained that NATCOM’s role is to combat the prevalence of illicit small arms and light weapons in the sub-region, ensuring compliance with international best practices on Small Arms and Light Weapons control measures to curb irresponsible flows and unauthorized retransfers.

“Nigeria’s efforts to align with this laudable initiative have reached an advanced stage, having passed through all legislative levels and now awaiting presidential assent,” he added.

With President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Chairman of the ECOWAS heads of state and government, there is belief that he is better positioned to assent to the NATCOM bill passed by the 9th National Assembly. This would also involve appointing Dr. Baba Mohammed, the bill’s proponent, as the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the commission.

Dr. Baba Mohammed expressed his gratitude to the President for considering the NATCOM bill, emphasizing its potential to address insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and other challenges facing the country.
