Tonye-Cole vs Fubara: Supreme Court decides today

Date:

By Christiana Ekpa

The Supreme Court has fixed Friday, January 19, 2024, to deliver judgement on an appeal filed by Patrick Tonye-Cole, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), in the 2023 general elections in Rivers State, against Governor Siminalayi Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).
The Supreme Court on January 15, 2024, informed the parties that it would communicate to them a date for judgement after all parties argued and adopted their final written addresses.
Tonye-Cole is challenging the victory of Governor Fubara, as announced by INEC.
The APC candidate wants the court to disqualify Governor Fubara, alleging that, as the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP, he did not resign as the Accountant General of Rivers State as stipulated by the electoral act.
Tonye-Cole is therefore asking the court to declare him the winner of the March 18, 2023, election.
