An Estate Surveyor and Valuer ESV. Chike Anyansi said Estate Surveyor and Valuer are the best managers to handle hospital facility management.
ESV. Anyansi stated this in Abuja yesterday, saying that facility management in a hospital is a complex management because it entails close monitoring of the facilities and equipment in that hospital to avoid mishap and failure.
He said there are some hospitals that have all the needed facility and equipment in a hospital but unfortunately those equipment and facilities detoriate as a result of poor management of those equipment.
“A hospital is an environment that one goes or visit to receive treatment for a particular illness with view to recuperate from the sickness through the use of the available facilities and equipment in that hospital.”
He said, when we talk about facility management in a hospital,we saying that facilities and medical equipments must always be checked all the time because there is always an emergency need to save a life in the hospital .
The Estate Surveyor however stated that,”In a hospital there are units that must be priotised because of the complicated nature of those units.
“ Areas in a hospital that must be priotised as follows: ICU – Intensive care unit, NICU – New born intensive care unit, Theater – Operational Room and
Intensive Care Unit; is a unit in the hospital where patients with critical illness are placed and monitored with life support equipment.
NICU / neonatal unit is a unit in the hospital where premature babies are placed in an incubator and monitored closely and constantly with the view to stabilize the babies.
Theatre room; is an operating room and where patients are taking to and operated on for a particular illness”,.
He noted that “It is now obvious that these areas are fully equiped with equipment that needs attention all the time and there must not be downtime in those areas”.
He explained that an Estate Surveyor and Valuer being a professional that has being trained in the management of built environment would be in a good position to know how to plan it professionally and ensure that there is no down time in the facilities in the hospital and mostly in those priority areas.
“Therefore Facility Management in a hospital must be priotized, and preventive maintenance must be applied most often.”
