Strike paralyses academic activities at Yola Polytechnic

The Striking Academic staff union of polytechnic Adamawa state polytechnic chapter has paralyzed academic activities of the institution to protest unpaid Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) allowances, running into several hundred millions of naira.
The institution was closed down three weeks ago, following agitations by the academic lecturers demanding the payment of their 3 years unpaid SIWES allowances.

The tension currently brewing in the institution is over a directive by the management of the institution yesterday, ordering the students of the institution to return back to classes but which the lecturers have kicked against.
The chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Dr. Coleman Koji, who spoke to journalists over the development in the institution, blamed the management over the avoidable paralysis of academic activities in the institution following the failure of the institution to meets its demand, which is the 15% of its basic salaries aggregated from the monthly salaries of the lecturers and expected to be paid at the end of each year.

However, the management of the institution maintained that the institution has re-opened for academic activities.
According the Rector of the institution Professor Bobboi Umar, who spoke through his information officer, Mr. Albert Mathila said as far as the institution is concerned academic activities has resumed.
He predicted the development on the fact that some members of ASUP had already started collecting their allowances.
