Having passed the 2023 appropriations act amendment bill sent to it by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,Senate proceeded on a one month Ramadan and Easther break to reconvene April 16, 2024.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu earlier in the day ,wrote the Senate to extend the recurrent expenditure component of the 2023 appropriations law to June 31, 2024.
The law passed and signed into law in 2003 ought to have expired by 31 March, 2024.
The Senate had extended the capital component of the 2023 appropriations law to June 31 ,2024 earlier on Tuesday.
Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo had, through an observation cautioned the Senate against extending the recurrent component of the budget as it will affect proper accounting records of the Auditor General’s report as well as that of the Accountant General for the Federation.
He was however countered by the Deputy Senate President ,Jubrin Barau who argued alongside senator Seriake Dickson, that the Senate has the powers of appropriation and would come up with a completely new enactment rather than just extension of the life span of the 2023 money law .
The bill was then read the first time, second time and consequently passed .
Senate then proceeded on its four-week break.
