The House of Representatives has called on security chiefs to launch special joint taskforce operations, in Shiroro, Rafi, and Munya Local Governments Areas of Niger State , to comprehensively address the security threats.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent importance by Rep. Ismail Modibo (APC-Niger) during plenary in Abuja on Wednesday.
Presenting the motion, the lawmaker said that Shiroro, Rafi, Munya Federal Constituency were the most affected federal constituency facing insecurity challenges in Niger State.
He stated that there had been increasing rate of banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling in Shiroro, Rafi, and Munya LGAs of the Niger State.
He added that this was in spite significant efforts by the military personnel and other security agencies.
According to him, within a few months, there were a series of bandit attacks in these local government areas.
“In the more recent attacks, on April 19, a military Captain, five other soldiers, and some vigilantes were ambushed and killed, on their way to respond to a distress call. “
He said the formation of a special joint security taskforce, supported by air surveillance and ground troops would effectively contain the banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling activities in the affected LGA.
He added that establishing a strategic joint security taskforce base at Maganda junction would have the great potential to end the security threats.
Adopting the motion, the House, urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide necessary relief materials to the Victims of the attacks and Communities displaced by bandits.
The House also mandated the Committees on Defence, National Security, and Humanitarian Affairs to ensure compliance.
