Police arraign bizman for defrauding friend

The Police have arraigned a businessman, Chukwudi Nwosu, 45, in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ court, Abuja, for allegedly cheating a friend of the sum of N537, 000.

The Prosecutor, Gideon Ekomson, told the court that the accused was reported by one Simeon Njoku at the Wuse Zone 3 Divisional Police Headquarters on April 7.

The accused, a businessman at Wuse Zone 3 Neighbourhood Centre was said to have contacted Njoku of the same address to help him get a shop for his business.

Ekomson told the court that sometimes in 2008, the accused contacted Njoku to help him get a shop at the Neighbourhood Centre, which he did with his money.

He said that the accused told the complainant to facilitate it by getting it through the electronics dealers association, Jabi Plaza branch, Abuja.

Ekomson said that the complainant went ahead to do everything with his money amounting to N537, 000, which the accused refused to refund him.

He said that the accused told his friend to carry out the process under false pretence and had deliberately refused to pay back the money.

The prosecutor said during police investigation, the sum of N25, 000 was recovered from the accused.

He said that the accused committed the case of criminal breach of trust and cheating, contrary to sections 312 and 322 of the Penal code respectively.

Meanwhile, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Senior Magistrate Ogboi Anthony granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety in the like sum who must live within the court jurisdiction.

He adjourned the matter to August 6 for hearing proper. (NAN)
