2 labourers bag 30 months’ imprisonment for theft

Date:

An Abuja Senior Magistrates’ court sitting in Wuse Zone 2, sentenced two labourers to 30 months imprisonment each for joint act and theft.

The two convicts, of no fixed addresses, Salisu Shehu, 32, and Ibrahim Yusuf, 21, had pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against them.

The Magistrate, Mr. Christopher Oba, in his judgement, sentenced the convicts to 30 months imprisonment with no option of fine.

Oba sentenced them to 18 months on joint act, 12 months on theft and discharged them on the charge of house breaking.

The magistrate ruled that the sentences should run concurrently.

He said that their sentence would serve as deterrent to others.

The prosecutor, Insp. Jeremiah Elijah, had told the court that Mr. Musa Babapanya and Mr Barnabas Jaja, all of Sunny Villa Homes, Abuja, reported the matter at Police Divisional Headquarter, Lugbe, Abuja.

Elijah said that the two accused persons and other three, now at large, conspired and burgled the house of the two complainants where they made away with some items.

He listed items to include one LG flat screen TV, two remote controls, one Acer laptop, one blackberry phone, one computer bag, gold wedding ring, earrings, necklace and wristwatch, among others things.

He said the items were valued at N1.18 million.

Elijah explained that the two accused were arrested and the said items were found in their possession except the wedding ring and the phone.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene sections 79, 354 and 288 of the Penal code respectively.

The accused pleaded for leniency and begged for forgiveness.

“We were looking for what to eat, since we are jobless,’’ they pleaded. (NAN)
