Businessman faces N3.5m fraud charge

A 29-year-old businessman, Jide Emonor, who allegedly obtained N3.5 million under false pretenses, yesterday appeared before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Emonor, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and theft.

The Prosecutor, ASP Godwin Eze, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Dec. 31, 2013 at Ojo Town, Ojo, Lagos.

Eze said that the accused collected N3.5 million from one Mr. Bartholomew Metu, under the pretext of awarding him a contract.

He said the accused, however, did not award him any contract and also did not refund the money.

Eze said that the offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an accused may be sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for fraud.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

The Magistrate, Mr. Taslimi Shomade, granted the accused bail in the sum of N3.5 million, with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till July 25, for mention. (NAN)
