The SOS Children’s Villages has revealed startling statistics on child labor in Nigeria, indicating that over 39.2%of Nigerian children are involved in child labour, with 22.9% working under hazardous conditions. Additionally, the organization noted that about 18 million children are currently out of school, primarily due to poverty, conflict, and insecurity.
Eyekomagba Isaac Chimezie, a member of the SOS Youth Parliament, made these statements during the “Stomp for Peace” campaign held in Abuja on Friday.
He highlighted that out of every ten Nigerian children who experience violence, only five out of 100 receive any form of assistance, expressing concern that child labour and trafficking have reached alarming levels in Nigeria.
Deputy Speaker of the Youth Parliament, Atulegwu Favour Mmachukwu, while speaking, revealed that more than two million Nigerian children suffer from severe malnutrition, hindering their ability to grow healthily and realize their full potential.
She also said over the past decade, more than 100,000 children have been kidnapped in Nigeria, a statistic she emphasized represents real lives brothers, sisters, and future leaders whose rights to a safe and happy childhood are being compromised.
“Let us stomp together to end child labor and trafficking in Nigeria. Let us stomp together to advocate for resources in schools so that every child has access to quality education,” Mmachukwu urged.
She further called for collective efforts to ensure proper care for children to prevent neglect and abandonment, as well as to eliminate violence and insecurity in their lives.
Mmachukwu urged community leaders and global citizens to unite in supporting Nigerian children in their fight for a brighter future and to stand up for peace for every Nigerian child.
The SOS Children’s Village campaign underscores the urgent need for action to protect the rights and well-being of Nigeria’s children, paving the way for a generation that can thrive in a safe, supportive environment.
