The House of Representatives, on Wednesday asked the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to investigate the recent earth tremors in Abuja, the Nigerian capital with the aim of identifying the potential hazards and develop immediate safety measures.
This was sequel to the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda at plenary on Wednesday.
Moving the motion, Chinda expressed concern the unusual seismic activities in the nation’s capital, citing media reports and resident complaints from various districts, including Mpape area.
The lawmaker also expressed worry over the lack of conclusive explanations for the tremors which caused growing fears among residents who assumed they could be precursors to more severe seismic events, potentially causing significant structural damage to the Federal Capital Territory’s infrastructure.
Chinda admitted that certain regions within the territory have experienced climate-related tremors in the past, hence the need for proactive measures to prevent potential disasters.
