FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has opined that women are not just vital contributors to national economy; but also catalysts for innovation, social change, and sustainable development.
Mariya Mahmoud who was the Special Guest of Honour at the madien Abuja Business and Investment Summit, also called on stakeholders to support women entrepreneurs.
Speaking on the importance of women entrepreneurship, Mahmoud asserted that businesses led by women tend to be more socially responsible and have profound impact on their communities.
She highlighted some of the significant barriers faced by women to entrepreneurship despite their potentials.
She said:” From limited access to financing and mentorship, to social and cultural constraints. The challenges are numerous.
“However, it is time we recognize that empowering women entrepreneurs is not just a matter of equity; it is an economic imperative.”
While expressing gratitude that women are increasingly taking on leadership roles in business, she revealed that the World Bank estimates, women own about 41 per cent of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country.
According to her, “Most women are breaking barriers, creating jobs, and driving economic growth.
“They are in technology, agriculture, manufacturing, and services—proving that their contributions are as diverse as they are impactful.”
Furthermore, the minister tasked the Abuja Investment Company Limited to intensify efforts in establishing platforms that connect emerging women entrepreneurs with experienced mentors that could provide the guidance and support necessary for success.
Earlier in her opening remarks, Amb. Maureen Tamuno, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Abuja Investments Company Limited, reiterated that it is the responsibility, as leaders and changemakers, to dismantle barriers faced by women and create pathways for sustainable growth for women entrepreneurs.
Tamuno, who expressed satisfaction that the summit has set the stage for actionable strategies that promote gender equity, drive inclusive growth, and foster a business environment where both men and women can succeed.
She stressed that collaboration and partnership remain key to unlocking new opportunities and creating an investment landscape that embraces innovation, nurtures entrepreneurship, and delivers lasting impact for the communities.
