Following the declaration of state-of-emergency on education on Kano state, the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf seems to have swung into action as construction and renovation works are ongoing at primary and secondary schools in the state.
PEOPLES DAILY reports that the project is oat of the governor Yusuf-led administration’s campaign promises to reform the decayed education sector.
The government’s commitment is to provide quality teaching and infrastructure in the over 4,000 primary and secondary schools in the state.
During a visit by our reporter to some of the schools within Kano metropolis, our correspondent observed that the projects are ongoing.
It was observed that while some schools are receiving reconstruction works, others have seen renovations of class rooms with some have even been completed.
At unguwar Jakada Primary School in Gwale Local Government, our correspondent observed that while a block of 6 classrooms with offices is under construction, renovation work jad been completed on the other block of the same size.
The construction work at the primary school is at the level of 50 percent completion, according to a supervisor of the project.
“The project is at about 50 percent completion as you can see. Work is ongoing from morning to evening.
“We are getting maximum cooperation from the government that is why the work is moving fast and smoothly,” he said.
At Abubakar Yusuf Government Junior Secondary School, Hotoron Kudu in Nasarawa Local Government area, another blocks of classes are under construction.
At Darmanawa Gadar Karfe, out correspondent observed that a block of classrooms was under construction but at the foundation level.
However, the contractor and bricklayers were at the site doing the work.
Meanwhile, even after governor Yusuf launched the distribution of the first batch of 78,000 desks for the public schools, our correspondent observed that some students still take lessons on bare floor.
Also, in one of the schools visited by our correspondent, the headmaster told our reporter that the challenges faced by the school are lack of desks and enough teachers.
This calls for more commitments to address the dearth of teachers and infrastructure to achieve positive results in the state of emergency declared by governor Yusuf.
