…As agency clarifies on Apapa explosion

Date:

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has disclosed that the recent Apapa explosion was an accident and not a bomb attack.

The agency made the clarification over various speculations on the explosion that occurred at Folawiyo Energy Depot along Creek Road, Apapa.

According to NEMA’s Lagos spokesman Ibrahim Farinloye, the explosion was an accident which occurred when some people were refilling a gas cylinder.

Owners of the premises have not made any official statement, but unconfirmed sources claimed that four people were killed in the accident.

Earlier, it was reported in the media that the explosion was as a result of a detonated Improvised Explosive Device (IED), claiming that the explosion occurred after a lady dressed in hijab sneaked into the energy depot’s compound with a fuel tanker and set off the explosion.

There were also claims that the lady planted another explosive in another standby car outside of the premises at Alex Junction and that she was sighted fleeing in a strategically parked car minutes after the explosions.

Confirming the incident, the Apapa Divisional Police Officer, Usman Ndanbabo, corroborated that there was an explosion, but said it was not a bomb blast. He dispelled the “terrorist-attack” story as a mere fabrication.
