By Tobias Lengnan Dapam

The Chairman House Committee on Environment in the Nasarawa House of Assembly, Honourable Adamu Omadefu has revealed that members of various communities in the state where mining is taking place are treated as slaves.
The lawmaker made the revelation on Monday while briefing journalists and members of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), on the outcome of his visit to Abuni community in Awe local government, where a Chinese company, Multiverse hold sway.
The oversight visit was in response to petition by CEOs, urging the house to address various challenges faced by mining communities.
The petition was jointly signed by the Renevlyn Development Initiative (RDI), the Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN) and the Citizens Free Service Forum (CFSF).
The petition dated 3 October 2024 urged the lawmakers to embark on a comprehensive environmental audit of Abuni and Uke district and their source of water, revoke the mining license of any company found wanting, and scrutinize the agreements between the mining firms and traditional rulers in the communities affected.
The lawmaker said, “what we discovered was an
Eyesore; everything you raised in your petition was confirmed as the true reflection of what is going on in the communities. The mining companies are treating our people as slaves in their own country.
“It is unfortunate what the mining companies are doing in the communities. It is a condition that you can’t wish for your enemy.”
He said aside destroying the environment, the only source of water in the community is polluted. “The company confirmed to us the the water is not good for drinking. Unfortunately, the workers told us that the water is what they rely on.
“We also discovered that there is no clinic in the community and workers are subjected to inhuman treatments. The company is raising a generation of angry youths that might not be easy to contain in the future.
“The company pay the workers daily pay of 2500 Naira from morning to evening. The workers are also made to pay a fine of N10,000 for any offence committed.”
Speaking further, he said the company is not living up to its Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Development Agreement (CDA with Abuni community.
“ There is no road, health facility, no skill acquisition among others as contained in the CDA.
“We as Committee, we will not take it likely with them. We will ensure they live up to their responsibilities.
“We will continue to visit mining communities in order to ensure that mining companies provides their Corporate Social Responsibilities.
“ This is to ensure the development of mining communities and the state at large,” he said.
The committee chairman cautioned mining companies against violating Community Development Agreement saying that the House will not hesitate to invoke relevant laws against violators.
