The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom has expressed Federal Government’s reediness in working with relevant partners to strengthen the health system, increase the coverage of essential health interventions, and ensure that all children, regardless of their location, have access to life-saving nutrition commodities.
Kachollom who made this known during a keynote address at the Vitamin A Supplementation (VAS) Round-Table Dialogue held in Abuja Monday said that adequate nutrition and vitamin A supplementation play a crucial role in supporting the growth and development of young children.
Kachollom who was represented by Director/Head, Nutrition Department of the Ministry of Health, Ladidi Kuluwa Bako-Aiyegbusi mni, said Vitamin A was essential for immune function, vision, and cell growth and its deficiency can lead to severe health issues such as increased susceptibility to infections, vision problems, and even blindness.
According to her, “The government remains committed to working closely with partners to strengthen the health system, increase the coverage of essential health interventions, and ensure that all children, regardless of their location, have access to life-saving nutrition commodities”.
She noted that regular vitamin A supplementation, particularly for children 6 – 59 months of age, has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of severe illness and death from common childhood infections like measles and diarrhea.
Kachollom said that Vitamin A Supplementation was one of the primary health interventions during MNCH Week, which is part of a broader effort to tackle malnutrition and improve child health outcomes in Nigeria.
“The importance of partnership and collaborative efforts in addressing nutrition-related challenges and achieving sustainable improvements in public health cannot be overemphasized.
“The Nigerian government deeply appreciates the continued support and partnership of organizations such as Nutrition International in advancing efforts to improve the health and well-being of its citizens, particularly in the area of Vitamin A Supplementation (VAS)” she said.
Also speaking, Director/Head, Nutrition Department of the Ministry of Health, Ladidi Kuluwa Bako-Aiyegbusi mni, represented by Head, Micro Nutrient Deficiency Control, Chief Uruakpa John C. said that VAD was a public health issue in Nigeria, affecting between 11% and 28% of the population.
She informed that National Food Consumption and Micronutrient survey (NFCMS) unveiled a national prevalence rate of 31.3% for Vitamin A deficiency among aged 6-59 months saying that it was a public health concern.
Director, Child Survival Portfolio for Africa in Nutrition International, Banda Ndiaye said Vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem and has linkages with child mortality.
He the issue was not making decision, but to have a roundtable dialogue where stakeholders will be made to bring out the challenges and offer solutions.
Nutrition International Country Director, Dr. Osita Okonkwo stated that with a national prevalence rate of 31.3% for Vitamin A Deficiency among children aged 6–59 months as revealed by the National Food Consumption and Micronutrient Survey 2021, and also an under-five mortality rate of 110 deaths per 1,000 live births, the urgency for effective interventions was now and cannot be overstated.
Okonkwo said it was instructive to note that despite the high rate of VAD, Nigeria’s Vitamin A Supplementation (VAS) coverage was alarmingly low at 25%.
Nutrition Manager UNICEF, Proper Dakuran said that Vitamin A Supplementation was all about Child survival and development which boosts the immune system and ensures good eyesight.
