The Chief Jackson Omenazu-led faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has criticized Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for allegedly undermining due process and creating political tension in the state.

The group, in a statement on Friday, expressed concerns over the governor’s engagement with a three-member House of Assembly, describing it as unprecedented.

The statement, signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General, and Chief Chinenyeze Thompson Ohia, National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, declared support for the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly led by Speaker Martin Chike Amaewhule.

The group described Amaewhule as the legitimate leader of the state legislature, urging Governor Fubara to prioritize peace and unity in Rivers State.

The Omenazu-led faction commended the Assembly for overriding the governor’s veto on three critical bills: the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Amendment Bill, the Rivers Electricity Market Bill, and the Rivers State Commission of Inquiry Bill, 2024.

According to the statement, the legislature acted in line with the Nigerian Constitution to address socio-economic challenges, particularly those affecting marginalized communities.

The group criticized Governor Fubara for withholding approval of the bills.

“The legislators have affirmed their commitment to their constitutional responsibilities and democratic principles.”

The presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill by the governor to another group of lawmakers, including Victor Oko-Jumbo, Adolphus Timothy, and Sokari Goodboy, was described as “perplexing” and inconsistent with the interests of Rivers residents.

The statement further commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to maintain political balance in Rivers State, which it said enabled the Amaewhule-led Assembly to function effectively.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo stands resolutely in support of the Assembly as they champion democracy, uphold citizens’ welfare, and navigate governance complexities for the betterment of all Rivers State residents,” the group said .
