ARDA Development Communication Incorporated has trained media professionals in Abuja on the critical role of the media in promoting women’s representation in political leadership and governance.
The training, held under the Advance: Women Political Participation in Nigeria (AWPP) project, is funded by the Canadian Government through UN Women.
It aims to equip journalists with the necessary skills to challenge gender biases and drive conversations that encourage women’s active participation in governance.
The AWPP project addresses barriers preventing women from securing political leadership positions in Nigeria. It also seeks to empower female leaders by enhancing their visibility and influence through strategic media engagement.
According to ARDA, the training will enable media professionals to integrate gender-sensitive reporting into their work while actively contributing to ongoing constitutional and electoral reforms promoting women’s inclusion in governance.
The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 5 (target 5.5), which advocates for equal opportunities for women in leadership and decision-making roles. It also supports policies that foster gender equality and inclusive governance in Nigeria.
ARDA, a leading Nigerian NGO, has collaborated with international organizations such as UNICEF, USAID, and John Hopkins University to implement social and behavioral change communication projects across Africa.
With this latest training, the organization reinforces its commitment to using media as a tool for promoting women’s political empowerment and ensuring gender-balanced representation in leadership.
