Some youths under the aegis of Abuja Original Inhabitants Youths Empowerment Organisation (AOIYEO) have lauded the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike for directing an upward review of the obsolete compensation rate to natives for land.
According to the Director, FCT Resettlement and compensation Department, Nasiru Suleiman, who did not only confirm the development, but disclosed that the department have already recommended a 100 percent increase.
Suleiman said government attention was drawn to the issue when FCT Administration officials attempted to clear the obstructing structures on a road corridor in Gishiri for the ongoing road construction and the people protested.
He opined that the committee will in two weeks time submit its recommendations to the minister for final approval.
He said an upward review as directed by the FCT minister was just and fair, going by the way things are nowadays.
Reacting to the development, AOIYEO President, Isaac David noted that it was worthy of commendation that the minister, Nyesom Wike has directed the upward review of funds for compensation to natives.
He added that for charging those in charge to thoroughly look into the matter and make the compensation at par with global best practices, Wike has again demonstrated capacity and commitment to improving the standard of living of the people.
According to him, the minister had answered the long yearnings of the natives of Abuja.
He added that the existing structure has been in operation since 2014 and has become obsolete going by the rate of inflation and other changes in the economy.
He expressed optimism that the new recommendation, when officially signed by the minister will commence from this year 2025.
Furthermore, the Abuja natives leader, David described Wike’s decision as a significant milestone in ensuring fair compensation for the indigenous people of Abuja.
“This upward review of land compensation rates underscores our long-standing demand for equitable treatment since 2014.
“As such, the government must be commended for ensuring that those affected by land acquisition policies are compensated fairly,” he said.
He said on behalf of the FCT indigenous people, the group acknowledges the Minister’s recognition of the need to balance development objectives with the rights and welfare of local communities.
He opines: “Today, Wike has made history by demonstrating his commitment to ensuring that those who have historically contributed to Abuja’s growth receive fair treatment and support.
“ For this, we urge both indigenes and residents to continue supporting the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Minister Wike.”
He however, highlighted the historical injustices faced by FCT’s indigenous communities, who have often received inadequate compensation due to outdated policies.
He emphasised that the revised rates represent a long-overdue recognition of the true value of land in the rapidly developing Federal Capital Territory.
“This decision is not just a policy change; it is a restoration of dignity for our people. We commend the Minister for listening to our concerns and working towards a solution that uplifts our communities.
”We are optimistic that his actions will pave the way for better negotiations and partnerships between local communities and government developers in the future.
“The updated rates will take effect immediately, and the Minister has committed to a comprehensive communication strategy to ensure that all stakeholders, including landowners and developers, are informed of the changes”, he stated.
David also appealed to the FCT administration to provide affected individuals with sufficient time to relocate their moveable property before government projects commence on the acquired lands.
