President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledge his administration commitment to championing environmental policies that will prioritize the well-being of Nigerians saying that there will be stricter enforcement of environmental regulations to protect our environment for future generations.
Mr. president, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, stated this on Tuesday at the state house banquet hall in Abuja while being conferred with the ‘Environmental Health Leadership Excellence Award 2025’.
Mr. Tinubu also said that his administration will confront urgent environmental challenges such as climate change, deforestation, and pollution adding that global challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and emerging health risks demand urgent and sustained action.
According to him “this Award serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to push the boundaries of what is possible in safeguarding public health and the environment. Your work forms the foundation of a healthier Nigeria, and as we celebrate progress, we must also confront urgent environmental challenges such as climate change, deforestation, and pollution.
“This award strengthens my commitment to championing environmental policies that prioritize the well-being of our people. As we look to the future, we must prioritize environmental health, recognizing that the global challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and emerging health risks demand urgent and sustained action.
“Today, I am proud to launch a transformative initiative that will accelerate our environmental health agenda and drive meaningful change.”
Also speaking at the occasion, Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Ms. Didi Walson-Jack urged all stakeholders to strengthen the enforcement of environmental laws, particularly in waste management, air and water pollution, and industrial emissions, all of which directly impact our physical, social, and mental health.
She further said environmental health is a shared responsibility that concerns every citizen adding that local government health officers must be empowered to ensure compliance with environmental sanitation laws, fostering cleaner and healthier communities across the country.
In his address, Registrar, Environmental Health Council of Nigeria, Dr. Yakubu Mohammed Baba said this event marks a historic milestone for environmental health in Nigeria adding that this gathering is a testament to the collective efforts of dedicated professionals and the Environmental Health Council in recognizing and celebrating those who have significantly contributed to the advancement of this vital field.
“This event is not just about celebrating achievements; it is about reinforcing our shared commitment to strengthening environmental health policies, fostering innovation, and ensuring a cleaner, safer Nigeria for future generations,” Baba noted
