Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammad Matawalle, has voiced strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, emphasizing that the move is essential for restoring stability amid the ongoing political crisis.

According to the statement, the Minister urged all political actors and stakeholders to comply with the President’s directive and work toward a peaceful resolution of the crisis that has disrupted governance and public welfare in the state.

He reiterated that the Nigerian military is on high alert to protect government infrastructure and safeguard citizens, warning that any attempts to attack public facilities or disrupt order would be met with a firm response from security forces.

“Reflecting on the President’s address regarding the state of emergency, he acknowledged the gravity of the political crisis in Rivers State and the urgent need for intervention,” the statement noted.

Matawalle highlighted the unfortunate demolition of the House of Assembly by the Rivers state governor, which has left the state without a functioning legislature for over fourteen months.

According to him, this action has contributed to the ongoing political impasse and the inability of the government to effectively serve the people.

Matawalle also referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling that reaffirmed the necessity of a working legislative body and declared the governor’s actions unconstitutional. He stated that the court’s decision underscores the urgent need to restore democratic governance.

Expressing concern over reports of vandalism and threats from militant groups, the Minister called for unity in restoring peace and security in Rivers State.

He reassured citizens that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting lives, property, and vital infrastructure.

Reaffirming the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to national security, Matawalle urged all stakeholders to seize this opportunity to foster cooperation and rebuild democratic governance in Rivers.

He expressed optimism that the state of emergency would create a path toward lasting peace, ensuring that the people of Rivers State benefit from stable and effective leadership.
