Rangers International FC suffered a heart-breaking defeat in their rearranged NPFL 2024/2025 matchday 30 clash against Nasarawa United FC, succumbing to a late, contentious penalty at the Lafia City Stadium.
Substitute Balogun Kabir converted the 88th-minute spot-kick, sealing a 1-0 victory for the home side and denying the reigning champions any points.
With technical adviser Fidelis Ilechukwu on national duty with the Super Eagles in Rwanda, Coach Ekeh Ekenedilichukwu took charge. He opted for continuity, fielding a largely unchanged lineup from their recent President Federation Cup victory over Kano Pillars, with Okechukwu Uchebo replacing Frank Uwumiro.
The first half was a tightly contested affair. Rangers dominated possession, with Daniel Onyia, Isaac Saviour, Ikechukwu Mgbemena, and Hillary Ekawu orchestrating play from midfield. However, they struggled to break down Nasarawa United’s resolute defense, marshaled by Emeka Onyema.
A crucial late clearance from Patrick Egeonu of Rangers ensured the teams went into the break level.
Nasarawa United emerged with renewed vigor after the interval, forcing Rangers’ goalkeeper, Lucky Abdullahi, into a spectacular save in the 48th minute.
As the match appeared destined for a stalemate, a pivotal moment arrived. The referee awarded a penalty following an aerial duel between Rangers’ Ikenna Stephen and Nasarawa’s Leonard Ugochukwu.
Despite vehement protests from the visitors, Balogun Kabir calmly slotted home the decisive goal.
“It was a good game,” reflected Coach Ekeh Ekenedilichukwu post-match. “We failed to capitalize on our chances, and they were awarded a penalty that ultimately decided the outcome. We will analyze this match and make the necessary adjustments before our next fixture.”
Rangers who still occupy the 3rd spot on the log will look to bounce back when they host Plateau United FC in a highly anticipated matchday 31 encounter at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, on Sunday, March 30, 2025.
