The Senator representing Jigawa North-west zone and chairman committee on Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) Senator Babangida Hussaini raises concern over the death of 1,613 Nigerians as a result of petroleum tanker explosion accident between June 2009 to October 2024 across the country.

He explained that in the period under review many accidents occurred in the Nigerian roads which claims lives and valuable items lost.

“There is really no official figures as to the number of accidents and disasters from petroleum tanker explosion. From a personal research conducted there where 169 fuel tankers accidents which led the death of 1,613 innocent Nigerians”, Babangida said.

He said due to this and in searching for the lasting solution to the problems last Thursday during the senate plenery led the debate of the general principles of articulated vehicles safety regulations bill 2025, “the bill was read for the first time in November 2024, the bill is make a provision of regulations and safety of articulated vehicles in line with the construction of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended”.

The FERMA Senate committee chairman stated that “one of the provisions of the bill is the aspect that sees to made it mandatory for vehicles to be inspected every six months in order to guarantee their road worthiness”.
