Northern group demands justice after killing of 16 travelers in Edo state

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has condemned the killing of 16 travelers from Northern Nigeria in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi, Edo State, demanding an immediate investigation and swift justice for the victims.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG expressed profound sorrow and outrage over the attack, questioning the delayed response from security operatives.

“We seek answers as to why the response from security operatives was alarmingly delayed. By the time they arrived following a distress call, the damage had already been done, and lives were irrevocably lost,” the statement read.

The group criticized what it described as lapses in security and called on authorities to ensure such failures are not repeated.

“This raises serious questions about the effectiveness and readiness of our security apparatus to protect the lives of all citizens, irrespective of their regional or ethnic origins.”

The CNG emphasized the importance of national unity, noting that Nigerians from different regions coexist across the country.

“We must cultivate a sense of coexistence and mutual respect among all ethnic groups, recognizing that violence and hatred only breed further division,” the statement added.

The group called on the government to take decisive action against those responsible, stressing that such an atrocity must never be repeated.

“The CNG demands complete justice for the victims of this barbaric act. We will not rest until those responsible for inciting violence and those who took part in the killings are brought to justice,” the statement continued.

The coalition also criticized northern political and traditional leaders for their perceived inaction, urging them to ensure the security and protection of Northerners across Nigeria.

“The silence exhibited by leaders who claim to represent Northern interests is unacceptable. They must take decisive action to ensure the safety and security of Northerners across the country.”

The group stressed that all Nigerians have the right to live and work anywhere in the country without fear of discrimination or harassment. It also underscored the need for religious freedom and protection for Northerners in minority communities.
