Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, and the Shehu of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, have jointly appealed to the Federal Government to expedite the rehabilitation and expansion of the Alau Dam to prevent a repeat of the catastrophic 2024 floods.
The call came during the Sallah homage at the Government House in Maiduguri, where Governor Zulum expressed frustration over the slow progress of the N80 billion project, approved after the dam’s collapse triggered the worst flooding in decades across Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
“After the groundbreaking ceremony in March, work has not advanced as expected.
“I have raised this with the President and Vice President, and a state committee has been set up for immediate intervention. We cannot afford delays—the rainy season is already here.”
The Shehu of Borno echoed the urgency, citing the recent Mokwa flooding in Niger State as a dire warning. “We saw the devastation on September 10, 2024. The Federal Government must act now to avoid another disaster,” he stressed.
