Nigeria’s Bosun Tijani elected vice chair of ITU Council

In a significant stride for Nigeria’s global digital ambitions, the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been elected Vice Chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for 2025.

The election, which took place during the ongoing ITU Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, marks a historic milestone for Nigeria and affirms its growing influence in shaping global digital policy and innovation.

Founded in 1865, the ITU is the oldest specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for advancing global information and communication technologies (ICTs). It plays a pivotal role in driving inclusive, sustainable digital connectivity and infrastructure across the world.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Tijani expressed gratitude to the ITU Secretary-General, Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the management team, and member states for the confidence reposed in him. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the ITU’s mission, particularly in promoting resilient digital infrastructure and expanding meaningful connectivity to underserved communities.

“The world is at a defining moment shaped by rapid technological advancements and fundamental shifts in our societies,” he noted. “Yet, we are privileged to harness the transformative power of digital technology — a force for inclusion, introspection and progress.”

Dr. Tijani congratulated the newly elected ITU Chair, Ms. Cristiana Flutur of Romania, pledging close collaboration to achieve shared goals. He also called for collective efforts to make the ITU a beacon of inclusive innovation and trusted global cooperation.
