Global Rights Nigeria has condemned recent remarks by Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, describing them as unconstitutional, inflammatory, and potentially inciting.
The organization consequently demanded a public apology from Governor Okpebholo to Mr. Obi and his supporters, along with a withdrawal of his unconstitutional statement.
On Friday, July 18, 2025, Governor Okpebholo publicly stated that former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, must obtain “clearance” before visiting Edo State. According to Global Rights, the statement is not only legally baseless but also dangerous, as it implies a veiled threat of violence.
“The Governor’s declaration flagrantly violates Section 92(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which prohibits political speech capable of inciting violence or injuring ethnic, religious, or regional sentiments,” said Abiodun Baiyewu, Executive Director of Global Rights Nigeria.
Global Rights warned that no state governor has the authority to restrict the movement of any Nigerian citizen. Mr. Obi’s right to move freely is protected under Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “Senator Okpebholo’s comments not only show disdain for the Constitution but attempt to place him above it,” Baiyewu added.
The organisation expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend of inflammatory political rhetoric, especially as the country inches toward the 2027 elections. “Political leaders must lead by example, not with reckless speech that undermines national unity or threatens democratic freedoms,” the statement read.
Global Rights also criticised the silence of political actors and institutions in the face of the Governor’s comments, calling for principled leadership over partisan loyalty.
“As the nation prepares for a new electoral cycle, Global Rights emphasized the importance of political tolerance and constitutional adherence, urging leaders to promote peaceful political engagement and safeguard democratic institutions” Baiyewu noted.
