A group of northern lawyers under the auspices of Concern Arewa Citizens that is sponsoring a Bill seeking for the registration of southerners residing and coming to Kano state has hinted that it has concluded plans to stop the bill in the state House of Assembly.
President of the association, Alhaji Audu Bulama Bukarti, who dropped the hint at the zone 1 Police Headquarters in Kano, shortly after they paid a courtesy call to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the zone Alhaji Tambari Yabo, said they decided to rescind their action because of the federal government’s intervention on the issue, which ordered states to stop the registration across the country.
It would be recalled that the group sponsored a Bill in the state House of Assembly seeking for the registration of southerners residing and coming to Kano in retaliation of the proposed similar exercise in some southern states.
“The Bill was a child of necessity because of the humiliation of northerners in the south, we were particularly angry with the arrest of 484 northerners in Abia state and their deportation, and to worsen the matter Imo, Abia and Lagos commenced the registration of northerners, treating us like second-class citizens.
Bukarti stated that the group decided to put on hold their action because they believed in the unity and diversity of Nigeria, noting that the decisive action of all stakeholders encouraged them to withdraw the Bill.
He debunked insinuation that they were coerced to withdraw the Bill, stating that they withdrew it out of their own volition.
