The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has backed the Imo State Government’s decision to ban lavish graduation parties for nursery, primary and junior secondary pupils, describing the move as consistent with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education structure.
NOA Director General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement signed by its Director, Communication and Media, Bala Musa on Monday,said the policy will help restore values of discipline, modesty and hard work among young learners.
He argued that extravagant school ceremonies create false expectations of instant success and place unnecessary financial pressure on parents.
The Agency recently launched a nationwide campaign against excessive “sign-out” practices, with the Imo directive aligning with its broader goals of value reorientation and responsible upbringing.
Issa-Onilu also welcomed the state’s decision to stop schools from changing textbooks every year, saying it would ease the economic burden on families and make education more affordable.
He urged other states to adopt similar measures, stressing that policies which reduce waste and emphasise academics over showmanship will strengthen Nigeria’s education system.
