Sultan lauds Almajiri commission, seeks action on out-of-school kids

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has commended the Federal Government for establishing the Almajiri Commission.

He also pledged his full support for the Sokoto State Government’s initiative to reduce the number of out-of-school children.

Abubakar made the remarks on Friday in Sokoto when he received a high-powered committee tasked with reversing the trend of out-of-school children in the state.

He described the bold steps as significant moves toward inclusive education and essential social reforms in Nigeria.

The Sultan pledged his total commitment to the initiative, calling it both a moral and religious duty.

“This is a bold move to address the alarming number of out-of-school children in Sokoto State. I urge all stakeholders and individuals to support this effort.

“The palace is open to everyone, local, national, or international, who is genuinely working to uplift humanity and secure a better future for our children.

“Our doors remain open for collaboration that promotes knowledge, compassion, and justice.

“Education is the foundation for peace, stability, and sustainable development.”

The Sultan also commended Gov. Ahmed Aliyu for establishing the committee, describing it as a visionary step that could transform the future of Sokoto’s children.

He hailed the committee members for accepting the responsibility and urged them to remain committed to their mandate.

The Sultan further assured the full support of the Sultanate Council, pledging to use his influence to rally communities and leaders behind the cause.

Earlier, the Committee Chairman, Prof. Mustapha Namakka, said the committee was part of the state’s efforts to address the growing number of out-of-school children.

He expressed gratitude for the Sultan’s fatherly support and guidance, noting that it would help mobilise public support for the initiative.

“The Sultan’s endorsement is expected to galvanise grassroots support, encourage parental involvement, and strengthen policy implementation across the state,” Namakka said.

He added that with UNICEF’s strategic input, the committee was poised to launch targeted interventions focused on education, rural inclusion, and community-based learning.

Namakka thanked the Sultan for his timely response and intervention, reaffirming the committee’s commitment to support the government in the noble cause.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the initiative is supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) as part of its broader efforts to tackle the alarming rate of out-of-school children in Sokoto State.
