BREAKING: Police Disperse Pro-Nnamdi Kanu Protesters With Live Bullets, As Fearless Sowore led the protests

Tension rocked Abuja on Monday as security forces clashed with protesters demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The protesters, led by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, gathered near the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) headquarters in Maitama, chanting “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” and waving placards.

Despite warnings from the police, the protesters insisted on proceeding with their demonstration.

As the protesters marched, security operatives fired tear gas and live bullets to disperse the crowd. Videos circulating on social media showed protesters scampering for safety as gunshots echoed through the air. The Nigeria Police Force had earlier warned against holding protests near the Presidential Villa, citing security concerns. However, the protesters defied the warning, insisting on their right to peaceful assembly. The government has defended its stance on Kanu’s detention, citing national security concerns.

Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have condemned the use of excessive force by the Nigerian police.

“The right to peaceful protest is protected under Nigeria’s Constitution and international law. The use of tear gas and live ammunition against unarmed civilians is a gross violation that must not go unpunished,” Amnesty stated.

Despite the police crackdown, the protesters vowed to continue their agitation until Kanu is released. Sowore described the government’s actions as “a shameful display of state-sponsored intimidation” and urged the authorities to investigate the conduct of the officers involved
