Publisher and activist, Omoyele Sowore, along with Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, and Emmanuel Kanu, Kanu’s younger brother, have regained their freedom after meeting the bail conditions set by a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Kuje, Abuja.
The trio, alongside ten other defendants, were released after fulfilling the court’s ₦500,000 bail requirement each, with two sureties in like sum. The sureties were mandated to present valid identification and a three-year tax clearance certificate.
The group, including Joshua Emmanuel, Bishop Wilson Anyalewechi, Okere Kingdom Nnamdi, Clinton Chimeneze, Gabriel Joshua, Isiaka Husseini, Onyekachi Ferdinand, Amadi Prince, Edison Ojisom, and Godswill Obiama had been arrested for allegedly participating in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in Abuja on October 20, 2025.
They were accused of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, disobedience to lawful order, and public disturbance, charges the defence described as “baseless and politically motivated.”
According to the prosecution’s amended First Information Report (FIR), the protesters allegedly obstructed public movement, disrupted traffic, and chanted “war songs” while demanding Kanu’s release. The report also claimed Sowore fled upon sighting security operatives before being apprehended — a claim he has since denied.
While Ejimakor, Kanu’s brother, and ten others were arrested during the protest and remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre, Sowore was later picked up on October 23 at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he had gone to show solidarity with Kanu during his trial.
The court consequently granted bail to all 13 defendants and adjourned the matter to December 15, 2025, for hearing.
