Charge d’Affaires of the Sudanese Embassy in Nigeria, Ahmed Omer Taboul, has reiterated calls on Nigeria, sub-regional and regional organisations to wade in towards ending the ongoing war in Sudan.
Taboul disclosed this during an interview with newsmen on Friday in Abuja, against the backdrop of the invasion of El-Fasher by the rebel militia; Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
He stressed that the ongoing war had resulted in killing of not less than 3000 civilians, adding that it could engulf Africa if collective measures were not taken to end such violent crime in the country.
According to him, the RSF captured the army’s last stronghold in Darfur region, thereby hindering humanitarian aids and posed threats to UN and humanitarian groups.
Taboul said, “I can say hundreds of these mercenaries now are under control and in the hands of the national army of Sudan.
“So, what we want from the continental body is to enable our people in Africa to go back to Sudan, to be with us, to defend our real story, I think this is our right.
“We are still trusting Nigeria, ECOWAS, African Union (AU) and the international community to wade-in, because we are part of this continent.”
He commended the Nigerian government who during past decades hosted the Abuja Declaration, aimed at resolving southern Sudanese conflict and crisis in Darfur, saying such brought about peace at that time.
“We are still looking for our brother’s intervention from Nigeria, because we know the real weight of Nigeria; we are looking for the voice of Nigeria.
“We are looking for the arms of Nigeria, we are looking for the push of Nigeria. This is not only asked by the government of Sudan, but also by the people of Sudan.
“Now, wherever you call us and ask about the real position of Nigeria, we don’t see them even in this crisis, because not a single statement has been made in this regard by Nigeria.
“So, we will like the public opinion of Nigeria, we will like the people of Nigeria to know what is going on in Sudan really.
“If this war is not stopped, this will not harm and destroy only Sudan. This will affect the region, and it will go beyond that,” he said.
He decried silence by the international community over the crisis in Sudan, saying there was only a matter of condemnation without real action from regional or international levels.
“We are very interested in getting our brothers from across Africa on board and to engage them, in tackling our issues whether it is by peaceful means or even, during the war.
“The EU’s description from the beginning of this crisis was wrong; the EU equalled the government and the legitimate national forces with the militia.
“Sudan is a very important country not only for Africa but to the world. You cannot keep Sudan and Sudanese like this. This is unacceptable at all.
“From the beginning the Sudanese government urged the international community to designate the RSF as a terrorist organisation, acknowledging the undeniable evidence of its crimes, yet nothing has been done,” he said.
