The Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, accusing him of abandoning his official duties to focus on personal political interests.
In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Halliru Andi, the party said Matawalle’s absence from his constitutional responsibilities was noticeable and worrying.
“The Zamfara State Chapter of the PDP wishes to remind the Hon Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, that as a public servant his primary duty is to serve the people, not personal interests,” the statement read.
The PDP said while it acknowledges the directive by Senator Abdul-Aziz Yari Abubakar to All Progressives Congress (APC) members interested in contesting the 2027 governorship election to begin reaching out to voters, it condemned Matawalle for abandoning his constitutional duties at this trying time in the country just to pursue his political interest.
The statement added that Matawalle should focus on addressing the rising insecurity in Zamfara and across Nigeria to justify the confidence President Bola Tinubu placed in him.
“As Minister of Defence, you must place your constitutional duties above any other personal interest,” the PDP said.
The opposition party also expressed concern over the ongoing killings, kidnappings, and destruction of property by bandits in Zamfara, accusing Matawalle of ignoring the suffering of his people.
“The PDP can’t just continue to watch the barbaric killings of innocent people, kidnappings and the destruction of property by bandits, while you pay no attention to their predicament,” the statement continued.
“Abandoning your duty post to pursue your personal political interest can’t be tolerated anymore. Enough of your nonchalant attitude towards the insecurity menace in our beloved state and country at large. We say no to turning the Defence Ministry into the Ministry of Politicking.”
The party urged Matawalle to take this message seriously and prioritize his duties.
