Success, both in this world and the Hereafter, is not a mystery. Islam has laid out the path clearly. From the Qur’an and the Sunnah, we can extract three concise but profound codes to lasting success. These are: Knowledge, Discipline, and Goodness.
1) Knowledge – The Root of Faith
The very first word revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was “Iqra” (Read). This command emphasizes the foundational role of knowledge in Islam. (Suratul Al-‘Alaq 96:1).
Invariably, the first obligation which Islam placed on a sane and matured Muslim is to seek for knowledge.
Knowledge of Allah (SWT), His attributes, and how to worship Him, is the beginning of all spiritual success. It guides action, nurtures faith, and protects us from ignorance.
Islam does not stop at religious knowledge. It encourages beneficial knowledge in every area of life and as Muslims, we are challenged to excel in both the knowledge of the Dīn (religion) and the Dunyā (worldly affairs).
2) Discipline – The Trunk of Faith
Knowledge without discipline is like a ship without a rudder. It will eventually cap-sized. Without discipline, a man of knowledge is only recklessly alive.
The entire message of the Qur’an is rooted in discipline and Islam teaches discipline through every act of worship. The do’s and don’ts in the Qur’an are all about discipline. The five pillars—from prayer, fasting, Zakat to Hajj, are spiritual training in self-restraint and structure. (Suratul Al-‘Ankabūt 29:45)
Fasting in Ramadan, for example, cultivates patience and mastery over desire. (Suratul Al-Baqarah 2:183)
Even the Prophet (SAW), the best of all creation, lived a life of immense discipline and he once said: ‘The strong is not the one who overcomes others by strength, but the one who controls himself while in anger’.
Discipline shapes our character and like a rock that becomes a masterpiece only after enduring the sculptor’s chisel, a believer becomes refined through self-restraint and correction.
Every aspect of a Muslim’s life is under scrutiny of his faith. It is therefore not ironic to say that every successful man, whether in the spiritual realm or mundane life is disciplined, one way or the other. Once you bid farewell to discipline, then, you are saying goodbye to success in life and hereafter.
3) Goodness – The Fruit of Faith
When knowledge is rooted and discipline is firm, it produces the sweet fruit of good character which is the true measure of success in Islam. This explains why Allah says in Suratul Al- Hujurat 49:13 thus; Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.
The Prophet (SAW) was also reported to have said: ‘Nothing is heavier on the Scale of Deeds than good character and in another narration’, he said: ‘I was sent to perfect good character’.
Goodness transcends language. It is a silent force that touches the heart, even without words. Goodness is in kindness to others, honesty in dealings, patience in trials, and generosity in ease and hardship.
In conclusion, Knowledge is the root, Discipline is the tree, and Goodness is the fruit. If any part is missing, the cycle of success is incomplete. A Muslim who is knowledgeable, disciplined, and kind is not only successful but beloved to Allah.
Finally, if you crave for success in this life and Hereafter, then be at home with knowledge, be disciplined and be good to others at all times and in all situations.
May Allah (SWT) make us people of knowledge, grant us discipline in our affairs, and beautify our hearts with goodness.
May Allah grant us success in this world and in the Hereafter, and may He protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
