Cholera kills 5 in Borno

Five persons have died in Borno state following the recent outbreak of cholera in the state, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said.

NEMA, in a statement, issued by its North-East zone, Maiduguri office, signed by the zonal information officer, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, said the cholera outbreak was confirmed in the camp of displaced persons, who were rendered homeless by the Boko Haram sect.

The militants rendered over 15,000 people homeless, following attacks on Damboa, Chibok and other communities in southern Borno.  Many of them fled to such places as Biu, as well as Gombe and Gujba in Yobe.

The statement added that the agency has activated its Search And Rescue Epidemic Response (SAREEP), its epidemic response plan, at the camp, in partnership with Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and other stakeholders to address the challenges pose by the outbreak.
