Al-makura’s clearance shows democracy is working – UPN

Date:

Governor-Umaru-Tanko-Al-Makura-Nasarawa-State-House-of-AssemblyThe Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) said yesterday that the clearance of Gov. Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State by the panel set up to investigate 16 allegations of misconduct against him indicated the success of the nation’s democracy.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bari Salau, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the clearance was also indication that the country’s constitution was working.

According to Salau, Nasarawa State House of Assembly exercised its constitutional right by calling for the constitution of the panel to investigate the governor.

“It is normal for any state house of assembly to level allegations against its state governor on matters concerning the discharge of executive duties.

“Also, it is the duty of the judiciary to set up a panel, investigate and decide on such allegations.

“For the panel to have investigated and acquitted Gov. Al-Makura shows that the nation’s constitution is working and democracy is working too.

“Nasarawa State governor’s vindication shows that our democracy is growing well with checks and balances,” he said.

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly took steps to impeach Al-Makura through a resolution on July 14 which led to setting up of the panel by the state’s Chief Judge.

The panel, acting on the ground of lack of evidence on Aug. 5, cleared Al-Makura of the allegations and dismissed the matter.

Since then the parliament rejected the verdict on the ground that the composition of the panel was biased. (NAN)
