Yuletide: Akwa Ibom Community in Abuja Honours Indigenes, Unveils Ibom Bowl Project, Inaugurates New Executive Council

Date:

The Akwa Ibom community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has held a grand yuletide reception in honour of distinguished indigenes, including the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio; the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno; National Assembly members; and federal appointees of Akwa Ibom origin.

The high-profile event, which drew leaders, traditional rulers, and community members, also featured the unveiling of the Ibom Bowl Project and the inauguration of the 16th Executive Council of the Akwa Ibom Community in Abuja.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President of the Akwa Ibom Community in Abuja, Mkpisong (Barr.) Gabriel Fan, described the group as the most structured community association in the nation’s capital. He noted that the organisation remains committed to empowering youths with skills and mentorship, supporting women and elders, and promoting development initiatives that uplift the living standards of Akwa Ibom indigenes.

“As a community, we strive to empower our youth, provide service to our wonderful women, honour our elders, and promote development projects. We accept the ARISE agenda of His Excellency wholeheartedly and will support all related programmes,” he said.

Fan expressed appreciation for the presence of the Senate President, the Governor, lawmakers, and appointees, describing their solidarity as a boost to the community’s spirit and long-term aspirations.

The traditional leader of Akwa Ibom residents in Abuja, Chief Jackson Ndueso, told journalists that the event reflected the true character of Akwa Ibom people — peace, progress, and generosity. He highlighted the importance of the Ibom Bowl Project, revealing that the land—measuring about 5,000 square metres—was acquired during his tenure as president of the community.

According to him, the Ibom Bowl would serve as a cultural landmark, technology and industrial hub, and a home for all Akwa Ibom indigenes in the FCT, including youth corps members.

“We are showcasing the rich culture of Akwa Ibom people. The Ibom Bowl will tell the world who we are — industrious, honest, and kind. It will be a place to export Akwa Ibom to the world,” he said.

One of the major highlights of the event was the empowerment exhibition, where beneficiaries of the community’s skill acquisition programme displayed products ranging from fashion items and leatherworks to food craft and digital services.

The community’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Francis UdoAkpan, explained that while the Ibom Bowl would serve as a central hub for administrative, cultural, and economic activities, private investors would be engaged to fund and develop the project. He noted that leasing discussions and cost evaluations were ongoing.

Representing the Akwa Ibom State Governor, the Permanent Secretary of the Akwa Ibom Liaison Office in Abuja, TPL Aniekan Ubong Akpan, commended the community for its unity and unwavering support for the state government. He urged members to continue being good ambassadors and encouraged the new executive council to uphold transparency, innovation, and inclusiveness.

“This council must reflect the values of Akwa Ibom. Your role remains crucial in advancing the welfare of our people in Abuja,” he said.

The Senate President, represented by Hon. Patrick Umoh, Member Representing Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara/Essien Udim Federal Constituency, stressed the importance of community unity. He noted that the office he occupies belongs to all Akwa Ibom people and urged members to remain steadfast and law-abiding.

“I thank the executive of this community for making this reception a reality and for uniting Akwa Ibom people across the FCT. I ask for continuous prayers for the Governor of Akwa Ibom State and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I will also mobilise support for the Ibom Bowl Project,” he said.

The colourful, carnival-like ceremony showcased the rich cuisine and cultural heritage of Akwa Ibom State, underscoring the community’s growing presence and influence in the Federal Capital Territory.
