Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria has retained its position as the cheapest private university in the country, despite emerging as the second-best private institution nationwide.
The Founder, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, disclosed this on Thursday at the university’s first convocation dinner for the Class of 2025, held at its main campus.
Gwarzo said the institution’s affordable tuition policy underscored its commitment to widening access to quality education without compromising academic standards.
He stressed that MAAUN would continue to prioritise excellence while sparing parents and guardians undue financial burden.
The founder also urged parents to channel grievances through the university’s management for swift resolution, rather than taking to social media.
Earlier, the President of the university, Prof. Mohammad Israr, described the convocation dinner as historic, marking the graduation of the institution’s first set of students.
The Vice-President (Administration), Dr Habib Awais Abubakar, congratulated the graduands and thanked parents, staff and guests for their support, which he said contributed to the university’s growth.
In a goodwill message, the Director of the European Centre for Leadership and Entrepreneurship Education, Prof. Mahamouda Salouhou, praised Gwarzo for investing in education, describing the initiative as a boost to educational development.
Salouhou added that MAAUN had signed memoranda of understanding with reputable universities in the United States.
Also speaking, Prof. Hakeem Ibukunle of Morgan State University, Baltimore, commended the founder’s efforts in advancing education in Nigeria and beyond.
Some parents, including Alhaji Sa’idu Bello and Abdulrahaman Sulaiman Bawa Zaria, expressed appreciation to the university’s management for mentoring the students.
The convocation dinner featured musical performances and spoken-word presentations, bringing together students, parents, management and invited guests.
