Sokoto commends FG for support fight against queala birds’ invasion

The federal government has been commended for embarking on a campaign against the invasion of queala birds and other deadly insects that hampered food production in Sokoto state.

The state commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Muhammadu Arzika Tureta stated this, during the flagging-off ceremony of aerial spray exercise of queala birds for this year’s dry season farming yesterday.

He noted that the havoc caused by the birds on the farmlands is enormous and required that all hands must be on desk.

Tureta promised to facilitate the state government contribution towards the success of the programme through the state governor. He added that food security is critical to Governor Aliyu Wamakko’s administration.”

He, however, applauded the minister for the support and promised the state government readiness to argument President Goodluck Jonathan’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda.

Earlier, state Director, Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA), Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Jubrin Audu Enessey explained that the exercise was in response to the promise made by the minister to control queala birds’ menace twice a year nationwide.

He added that the number of farmers affected by birds had prompted the federal government to take such adequate measures.

He urged the affected states to always stick to the schedule time of the exercise in order to get timely result. “We do not stick to the appropriate time when the exercise ought to have taken-off,” he noted.

Also speaking, the Zonal Pest Control Officer in-charge of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states, Mr. Jude Omoregbee said the exercise was sponsored by the federal government.
