Breaking: Tinubu appoints Rotimi Oyedepo as Director of Public Prosecutions

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice.

The appointment follows Oyedepo’s transfer of service from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the mainstream Federal Civil Service. A letter dated December 23, signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, said the appointment was made in the public interest.

His appointment was announced on Tuesday by Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information and Public Relations, State House.

Oyedepo will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the current DPP, Mr Abubakar Babadoko, who is due to complete the mandatory eight-year tenure as a director on December 31, 2025.

A law graduate of the University of Ilorin (2007), Oyedepo was called to the Bar after attending the Nigerian Law School in 2008. He brings over 15 years of experience from the EFCC, where he specialised in prosecuting complex economic and financial crimes and also served as Head of the Monitoring Unit.

He was part of the Federal Government’s legal team in the landmark Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) case against the Federal Republic of Nigeria. His professional achievements include being named EFCC Outstanding Staff of the Year in 2014 and Best Financial Crimes Prosecutor in 2019.

According to the State House, Oyedepo is expected to use his expertise to reduce the Federal Government’s reliance on external counsel for major prosecutions and to ensure greater coherence and consistency in government legal strategies.
