CDS Oluyede honours fallen heroes, reaffirms military’s commitment to bational security

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, , has paid glowing tribute to fallen Nigerian service personnel, describing their sacrifices as the foundation of the nation’s peace, unity and sovereignty.

In a goodwill message to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, General Oluyede said the occasion provided an opportunity for Nigerians to collectively honour officers and men of the Armed Forces who paid the ultimate price in defence of the country.

He noted that the bravery and selfless service of fallen heroes would remain permanently etched in Nigeria’s history, stressing that their sacrifices were a patriotic calling rather than a mishap. The CDS also acknowledged the resilience of the families of the deceased, assuring them that the Armed Forces would continue to preserve the legacies of their loved ones.

General Oluyede commended troops currently deployed across various theatres of operation, praising their professionalism, courage and loyalty in the face of difficult and dangerous conditions.

He said their dedication continued to strengthen national security and reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ resolve to confront all threats to Nigeria’s peace and territorial integrity, both within and beyond its borders.

“The Armed Forces will give no quarter to those who seek to undermine our national heritage and democratic values,” he said, adding that adversaries of the nation would continue to face disappointment.

The CDS reiterated that troop welfare remained a top priority, in line with his military strategic philosophy aimed at consolidating the capabilities of the Armed Forces through enhanced joint operations, improved welfare, and sound administration. He said efforts would continue to build a highly professional force working closely with other security agencies and civil authorities, while drawing from the experience of military veterans.

General Oluyede expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his leadership, strategic direction and unwavering support to the military. He assured the President and Nigerians of the Armed Forces’ enduring commitment to safeguarding democracy, peace and security.

He also acknowledged the support of military families, particularly spouses, for sustaining the home front and enabling personnel to serve with focus and confidence.

Calling on Nigerians to use the remembrance period to promote unity, the CDS urged citizens to reject divisive rhetoric and reflect on the shared destiny of the nation. He encouraged Nigerians to wear the remembrance emblem with pride as a symbol of gratitude to past and present heroes.

General Oluyede concluded by praying for the eternal rest of fallen heroes and reaffirming the Armed Forces’ dedication to a future defined by peace, stability and prosperity.

The message was issued in Abuja in January 2026.
