A coalition of Northern groups and institutions, including the Arewa Consultative Forum, Northern Elders Forum, Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, Arewa House, and CEDDART, is planning a major conference to reflect on the legacy of Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardaunan Sokoto, 60 years after his assassination.
The conference, themed “Sixty Years Without the Sardauna,” aims to examine the region’s strengths and weaknesses and explore strategies for rebuilding and development.
Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna, Bashir M. Dalhatu, representing the coalition, emphasized that the conference is not just a nostalgic exercise but an opportunity for the North to critically assess itself and chart a new course for the future.
“The objective is not just to engage in consoling nostalgia, but to place the past in a position where it genuinely influences the present and the future of the people of the Northern Region,” he said.
The conference, scheduled for April 2026, will bring together leaders, intellectuals, entrepreneurs, women, and youth to discuss issues affecting the region, including security, the economy, and coexistence.
Dalhatu lamented the current state of the North, citing poor leadership, inter-communal conflicts, and a lack of opportunities for young people.
The groups are calling on Northerners and Nigerians to support the conference, which aims to rekindle the spirit of hard work, peace, and respect for the values that defined the Sardauna’s leadership.
The conference outcome is expected to include actionable strategies for improving the region’s fortunes.
