Kugbo market inferno: AMAC Chairman vows swift action

​In the wake of a devastating fire that razed a significant section of the Kugbo Wood Market, Abuja, the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu has pledged to ensure swift action on ending the menace.
In particular, the Chairman emphasized that the Council will no longer tolerate the structural irregularities that hindered emergency services.
​To this end, he directed immediate demolition of illegal structures blocking fire truck transit routes within the market.
Maikalangu, who made the pledge when stormed the markert for an on the spot assessment, also commiserated with Kugbo Market traders.
According to an e-signed statement from Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs to the AMAC Chairman,,Kingsley Madaki, yesterday Maikalangu, was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Hon Emeka Orji, and Kugbo Market traders to conduct an on-site assessment of the incident that occurred last Sunday.
​“We are not here only to commiserate, but to ensure this is the last time your livelihoods are erased by preventable disasters.
“The era of blocked access roads and delayed responses is over”, Maikalangu was quoted in the statement.
The statement read in part: “ A formal commitment to installing a dedicated Fire Service Outpost and industrial boreholes to provide the market with its own first-line defense.
“​The launch of a victim verification exercise to facilitate emergency financial aid and coordinate with the FCT Administration for long-term recovery.
“​The Chairman concluded by urging traders to cooperate with the upcoming market reorganization, noting that “safety is the only foundation for a sustainable economy.”
